For those businesses and residents who have complained to us about the persistence and intimidation by street fundraisers on Upper Street, our Director Christine Lovett has raised the issue on both Sky News and in the Sunday Telegraph recently.
Angel AIM will be campaigning for more stringent licensing and regulation of these charity fundraisers because, while we recognise that charities are feeling the pinch at the moment, in these days of trying to revitalise high streets and encourage the community back in, we don’t want people being driven away.
“Shops say they watch potential customers scurry quickly past their doors to avoid the chuggers, and residents tell us they avoid the lower end of Upper Street,” says Christine. “This is terrible for businesses and the community. We are looking at other ways to help our local charities raise much-needed funds and create relationships with businesses who might be able to benefit them.”
